The 56th season of the Morrison Artist Series begins tomorrow at San Francisco State University. This series of free chamber music concerts was created as part of the May Treat Morrison Chamber Music Center at San Francisco State University. All performances take place in the 700-seat McKenna Theatre at 1600 Holloway Avenue (just off the intersection with 19th Avenue), conveniently located near a trolley station.

Professor of Music and SF State alum (B.M. '76) Richard Festinger has been appointed the new artistic director of the Morrison Artists Series at SF State. A composer and performer, Festinger's background includes prestigious awards for contemporary chamber music composition and a performance at the Woodstock music festival in 1969.

On March 13, percussion fans have two opportunities to learn when the two traditions began, how they developed, and maybe where they’re headed. Unfortunately, as the two events take place on both sides of the San Francisco Bay simultaneously, starting at 3 p.m., you can only choose one. Cal Performances’ event takes place in Berkeley at Hertz Hall, while the Morrison Artists Series event will be given on the San Francisco State University campus.

Through the largesse of the Morrison Artists Series at San Francisco State University, Cabrera and SFCMP will perform in a free concert at the McKenna Theatre on campus at 3 p.m. March 6. The program will feature the same Ligeti, Du Yun and Current pieces, but in addition, composer and pianist Du Yun will join the ensemble in her 2009 work, "Miranda."

Finally, the Morrison Artists Series event will take place on Sunday, March 6, in the McKenna Theatre in the Creative Arts Building on the San Francisco State University Campus at 3 PM. Admission is free, and the pre-concert talk will take place at 2 PM in Room 146.

The Israeli Chamber Project, presented this weekend by San Francisco State University's Morrison Artists' Series, is an example of this diversity.
Best described as a string trio-plus, they'll be performing Bohuslav Martinu's Chamber Music No. 1, one of the last pieces the composer finished before his death, and certainly deserving of wider notice.

The next recital in the Morrison Artists Series of free concerts presented in the McKenna Theatre at San Francisco State University will be performed by the Israeli Chamber Project. The group is based both in New York and Israel with the goal of “cross-cultural mediation,” bringing their New York experiences back to the people of Israel and bringing something of Israel to overseas concertgoers.
